S outher had all the right connections, and put more of those pieces together for his second album: Glenn Frey, Linda Ronstadt, Peter Asher, Andrew Gold, Joe Walsh, Don Henley, David Crosby, Art Garfunkel. Black Rose sparkled as a result, though it still didn’t produce a hit single. Instead, it made a (now occasional) case that Souther was every bit as capable as Glenn Frey, Chris Hillman or David Crosby of making a good solo album. Not surprisingly given the players involved, it sounds like a lot of the California country-rock albums that came out in the wake of the Byrds. Souther has as good a voice as Frey or Crosby, and keeps things interesting with a fresh mix of music: country, rock, light reggae, funk, jazz and lush orchestrations. It doesn’t sound much different than the Eagles, with whom he’d co-written many tracks: “Best of My Love,” “James Dean,” “Doolin-Dalton.” As their Greatest Hits soared to #1, Black Rose borrowed just enough of that big spotlight to creep into the Top 100. While it didn’t produce a hit single, and frankly didn’t deserve to, there is some very good material on here, including “Doors Swing Open,” “Banging My Head Against the Moon,” “Faithless Love” and “If You Have Crying Eyes” (featuring Linda Ronstadt). Like I said, if this had been a Glenn Frey or Chris Hillman solo album, I would have been happy with the results. If you find yourself down that path already, Black Rose is worth picking up.
