T hey were knee deep in something alright. Here was a song that purported to be an anthem against faceless corporate product, yet embodied the castrated pop that was clogging the airwaves. Ah, the irony of it... ah, whatever. Today, it doesn’t rankle me so. They say you get mellower with age, or more malomar-y, or something. The flip side is a funky instrumental with found voices (radio speakers, the lady who tames the time) that reminds me of The Tubes. This single marked a couple of firsts: (1) the first time Jefferson Starship appeared as the abbreviated Starship and (2) the first #1 single for the band in any incarnation. There’s more constructive commentary to be found at Songfacts.
