K ronomyth Starship 3.1: A SECOND MIRACLE. Spitfire was nearly the spitting image of Red Octopus, led by another remarkable ballad from Balin, “With Your Love.” Grace Slick didn’t even get a single this time, and “Switchblade” had to settle for the B side. Written by Balin, former Airplane drummer Joey Covington and Bodacious DF guitarist Vic Smith, “With Your Love” is an uncanny bit of songwriting, even if it relegates the rest of Jefferson Starship to the role of a backing band. Slick’s blade isn’t nearly so sharp. Her unconventional songwriting style of mixing narrative and tension rather than traditional verse/chorus/verse makes it tricky to recall her songs. For every “White Rabbit” that leads somewhere, there are a lot of switchblades stuck in time.
