Joan Armatrading
Joan Armatrading is a singer/songwriter in the tradition of Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens and Elton John, which is to say intelligent and full of surprises. With her third record, Joan developed a style that would distinguish her as a unique, feminine voice in rock. An incurable romantic with an islander's ear for melodies on the wind, she (like Joni Mitchell) migrated from folk rock to electric rock to new wave during her career even while her perspective on love remained unchanged. Since all of that sounds impersonal, I'll add that when I listen to her music a little part of me wishes I were born a girl.
