I t was the title track to this album what introduced me to Joan Armatrading and (little criminal that I was) I recorded it off the radio onto a crappy cassette alongside Joe Jackson’s “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” and listened to it all the time. And it was with a little sigh of nostalgia that I reacquired the title track (and the rest of the album’s contents) on cassette years later. My Myself I represented a departure for Joan Armatrading: an overtly rock record, with a raw and aggressive edge that featured buzzing guitars, sharply clipped reggae rhythms and punchy bass lines. Blondie producer Richard Gottehrer handed alternative rock audiences a treasure with Armatrading, who heretofore was more of a pop artist. Songs like the title track, “When You Kisses Me,” “Simon” and “Is It Tomorrow Yet” are strong, independent statements that sound anything but vulnerable. Although the backing band and Gottehrer was a one-time shot, it shook the sleep out of Armatrading’s eyes and led to (arguably) her most popular phase, continuing to court left-of-center rock listeners with Walk Under Ladders and The Key. That’s not to take anything away from her eponymous third album, but the shift from victim to victor is where Armatrading really started to resonate with me. She has a strong voice and Gottehrer captures the drama inherent in her arrangements, especially on ballads like “Turn Out The Light” and “All The Way From America.” Me Myself I isn’t a retooling so much as a kick in the pants, one kick being apparently all it took to land Joan Armatrading near the front ranks of female rock artists.
