Joe Jackson
The last of the 3 Angry Englishmen to arrive at the party and the first to leave. Joe Jackson released three albums of lean, evocative, scathing pop and then abandoned the form almost entirely. Jumpin' Jive was a swing revival. Night and Day a Cole Porteresque collection of cosmopolitan jazz/pop. Then came the classical albums and, with them, the marginalization of his impact on pop music. Elvis Costello fancies himself a vocal stylist, Jackson sees himself as a composer, and both have the talent to cover their ambitious bets at least some of the time. Doesn't have a dangley-doodley thing to do with prog, of course, but I'm a sucker for a sharp three-minute pop song. A more complete version of this discography exists here (last rev. 11/07).
