A fter four albums and two singles, John and Yoko finally got serious. “Instant Karma! (We All Shine On)” is the first work from the pair that actually holds up against the legacy of The Beatles. No hippy chants, no primal scream therapy, this single taps into the wonderful vibe of “All You Need Is Love” (okay, in a sense so did “Give Peace A Chance”) and delivers the goods with a genuine pop song. I’m still apt to hum this in the supermarket; in fact, I suspect the Great Creator of All Things (if given to an absent-minded mood) would hum this song too. Yoko Ono Lennon (the pair had combined their last names after their marriage) delivers a lovely, complementary song on the B side, “Who Has Seen The Wind?” With flute and harpsichord accompaniment, it’s a nearly beguiling number that shows Yoko on her best behavior. There’s a little more on “Instant Karma!” available on Songfacts too.
