T wo Virgins is often described as a “sound collage,” which is how you explain a half-hour of caterwauling and disconnected musical accompaniment from a pair as provocative as John and Yoko. If you think the album cover is raw, wait ‘til you hear the record. Where The Beatles’ “Revolution No. 9” achieved a calculated effect of creepiness, the various sections that make up this album are improvisational and unpolished -- John and Yoko leave everything to chance. Yoko’s vocals do seem to push an imaginary envelope, but John’s contributions seem clueless to the seemingly artistic task at hand. The net result is interesting, if only because Lennon’s involvement keeps you waiting for something important to happen. It never does. Note that the original elpee was soon issued with a bag over the cover, more than a few of which likely found their way over listeners' heads.
