F izzled spells and dusty treasures from a series of demos recorded in 1986. That would place these squarely between 3 Ships and Big Generator (or between rock and a merry charybdis), which is a roundabout way of warning you that we’re in commercial waters here. Jon himself (in the generous paragraph that constitutes the liner notes) concedes that he was “trying to write pop songs” during this period. However, his assessment that “some of them could have worked” undersells Searching For The Songs. Personally, I think the material on here is at least as interesting as what turned up on In The City of Angels and ABWH. (In fact, both “Hurry Home” and “The Meaning of Your Love” later appeared on those works, the latter as “The Meeting.”) Let’s face it: demos from the unfashionable ‘80s isn’t the most appetizing carrot to every dangle from a stick. Yet after hearing the opening “Take Take My Love” and “So Can It Be,” I was convinced that here lay the better part of Angels. Those tracks and “I Can’t Believe” are the missing links that connect Angels to the ingratiating pop of Song of Seven and Animation. Not everything on here is a lost treasure, of course. Jon’s forays into new wave are little more than studied knockoffs (“Strawberry Wine,” “Just Say We’re Children”), and he really does sound like he’s on helium (his own joke) for “All I Want Is You.” Learning that there were unreleased demos from 1986 didn’t excite me initially, given the mediocrity of what made the cut on 3 Ships and Angels. However, Searching For The Songs is exactly the sort of unreleased album demo that should get fans excited. More than the live albums from the initial Lost Tapes offerings, this one was worth the search.
