C halk Mark was a marked departure from past works, choosing to match Joni’s voice with other established artists. Peter Gabriel sings on “My Secret Place,” Don Henley on “Lakota.” The result isn’t a traditional duet but rather a nontraditional blending; “My Secret Place” doesn’t sound like Gabriel or Mitchell. The setting is world pop typical of the post-So/Graceland landscape: complex rhythms and intoxicating musical patterns bubble below the surface, liquid bass lines ooze underneath, wires and vines coexist in the ecology. Some felt Mitchell was out of her element, but these songs are more or less on a par with the electr(on)ic work of Kate Bush and Suzanne Vega.
