L ene is the boss, Thomas Dolby is the prodigy, and “New Toy” is the most interesting and exciting song she’s recorded since “Lucky Number.” The rest of this EP is the usual unusual: slavic ska and spooky instrumentals. Two of the tracks, “Savages” and “Special Star,” showed up on her next album, No-Man’s-Land. All of this EP was appended to the Rhino reissue of Flex (Flex... Plus). I like “Never Never Land” as much as anything on Flex, but the rest of this mini record could rightly be called filler. Good filler, with a pat on the head for trying, but still inflexibly foreign-sounding compared to the streamlined Stateless.
