L iving Colour issued some unreleased and live material into the market to bide time between their second and third release. Although they had enough material to fill an entire disc (as evidenced by the 15-track Japanese version), a little Biscuits is what US audiences were treated to, featuring only five tracks. The Biscuits EP is an interesting appetizer (I remember listening to it in a friend’s apartment just before we went to the Lollapalooza concert in New Jersey), but the Japanese disc is the belt-busting feast that fans will want. Vernon Reid and company wear their influences on their sleeve with interesting covers: James Brown, Talking Heads, Jimi Hendrix, Pere Ubu, Bad Brains, Al Green, The Clash, Led Zeppelin. If that’s not enough, Biscuits also plays in the kitchen of the Living Colour catalog with a remix of “Love Rears Its Ugly Head” (available earlier on 12-inch) plus blistering live versions of “Information Overload,” “Type” and more. Both versions of Biscuits also featured two new studio tracks: covers of “Talkin’ Loud And Sayin’ Nothing” and “Burning of the Midnight Lamp” that explored scratching and ska with delightful results. Unfortunately, audiences wanted more from Living Colour than Biscuits, and by the time that Stain appeared other bands had usurped the alternative stage (Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana). For a moment in time however, Living Colour simply shone, and a lot of that magic rubs off on the full-length Biscuits. It’s probably the least essential of the band’s first four releases, but as outtakes albums go it beats the pudding out of Coda.
