Lou Reed
Reed rose from The Velvet Underground to take his place as New York's urban poet laureate. Unlike Hawthorne's "artist of the beautiful," Lou Reed is an artist of the brutal. He's been considered a glam rocker, an art rocker by association, an avant-garde noisemongerer, even a plain old rock & roller. He's never been considered prog and I won't submit his name for enshrinement, but consider this: his music is ambitious and it takes you places, two criteria I use for determining progressive music. Transformer, Berlin, New York, even the searing Rock 'N' Roll Animal are works of art as much as the paintings of Andy Warhol or the photographs of Robert Mapplethorpe. Don't judge the artist by the subjects he paints, judge him by his artistry. On these merits, Reed stands as one of the '70s great art rockers, and thus at least tangentially relevant to the prog rock scene, as both were birthed from the psychedelia of the '60s. Make sense?
