I ’ve heard music that sounds something like this, but nothing that sounds quite like it. With Bauhaus kaput, Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins formed Love And Rockets, the band’s name fair warning that these vaguely psychedelic, cavernous constructs had an aggressive undercurrent to them by design. There are moments when the music recalls OMD, Monks of Doom, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Shriekback, Brian Eno, XTC, The The and the kitchen sink for good measure. But pinning it down is impossible. The songs inhabit the same place, a middle world between song and sound. The vocals are whispered or chanted or sung, melodies appear and disappear. Songs stalk you from such a distance you wonder whether they’re really following you or just loitering in your vicinity. Listen to “Haunted When The Minutes Drag” and you tell me what they’re up to. They seem to shift from focused to unfocused, unsure whether they want to be The Beatles or Echo and The Bunnymen. It’s an interesting approach. Acoustic guitars strummed as big as steamer suitcases, electronic sounds buzzed in and out, vocals delivered absent-mindedly. Inscrutable stuff, but then I suppose that’s where its charm lies. As a reprieve from all this pondering, Love And Rockets closes with the beuatiful instrumental “Saudade.” If you enjoy the work of Dream Academy (and Trouser Press beat me to that analogy), then this might be a little slice of heaven indeed. It certainly is intriguing, but is it substantive enough to fill the void left by Bauhaus? A pipe dream perhaps, but history still isn’t done sorting out the impact of Love And Rockets. Critics of the future may well wonder who Bauhaus was, and question how we didn’t see the genius of L ‘n R all along.
