T o commemorate 20 years of progressively crappy Christmas music, Mannheim Steamroller invited fans to take a break from collecting Hummel figurines or commemorative plates or whatever it is they do to kill time between holidays and submit their choices for a “best of” Mannheim Christmas CD, the likes of which you’re looking at right now. Despite some confusion to the contrary, these don't appear to be new songs or re-recordings of old songs, but selections from the seven Christmas CDs what came before. Chip Davis did write the introductory “Celebration” for the occasion, but there are no Christmas completists out there, right? The Steamroller’s stylized rock-meets-renaissance readings of “Good King Wenceslas,” “Deck the Halls” and “Wassail, Wassail” are classics in the modern Christmas canon, and I might be inclined to add “Fum, Fum, Fum” and “Carol of the Birds” to my shortlist soon. Otherwise, this is a fair sampler with no more or less Christmas spirit than you’d find on most of their holiday discs (except for the horrific abortion of The Christmas Angel). If you’re only going to buy one Mannheim Steamroller CD from the dozen that are now out there (it’ll probably be thirteen by the time I post this review), Christmas Celebration would seem to be the safest choice since it contains fan favorites from across two decades. Personally, I’d be leery of following the advice of Mannheim Steamroller fans; the first two Christmas CDs rocked the halls but the rest were kind of tannenbummers. However, if the shiny metallic cover proves too great a temptation, Christmas Celebration at least delivers a solid selection of Mannheim snowblowers. You might even want to Hummel long.
