K ronomyth 10.1: RUNNING ON EMPTY. The song “Running For Our Lives” not only provided the album’s title, A Child’s Adventure, but also its first single. Unlike her earlier, angrier albums, A Child’s Adventure is modern rock/reggae written and recorded with Compass Point players (essentially the Island house band) Wally Badarou and Barry Reynolds. While it’s a likeable enough track in a sleepy sort of way, “Running For Our Lives” isn’t going to change your world the way “Why’d Ya Do It” did. Marianne has a broken voice, no way around it, and there isn’t enough audiorouge in the world to hide the bruises. A song like this might have worked for a Kim Wilde, but not Marianne Faithfull, not as this stage. The only person who gets to sound like this and still sell records is Bob Dylan. Of minor interest, the single version edits approximately one minute from the album version.
