Marshall Crenshaw
His self-titled debut was supposed to be the start of something big. Somehow, the hit parade never happened. Not for a lack of great songs; the first three albums are chocked full of them. Maybe it was a lack of charisma and karma; critics didn't compare him to Buddy Holly for nothing. Marshall Crenshaw is a cross between Joe Jackson and Gene Vincent: an ace songwriter in a 30-year-old suit. At his best (which is most of the time), his songs recall the vintage Sun recordings of Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison.
