M atthew Fisher knew he was exiting the fame train when he left Procol Harum. And that seems to be the point of Journey’s End: to tell you why he left, what he felt like after he left, how he plans to live his post-Procol life. Interesting if you’ve built a cult around AWSoP, but not so for the rest of us. When Peter Gabriel addressed his departure from Genesis in “Solsbury Hill,” it was electrifying for me because (1) it’s a great song, and (2) that moment was the source of much speculation on my part. But I actually had to go back through my archives to see when Matthew Fisher left Procol Harum because, really, I’d never given it any thought. So the residual bitterness that informs a “Going for a Song,” “Play the Game” or “Journey’s End” is like in-fighting to an outsider. I don’t understand the bitterness because I didn’t follow the story. What I end up following here are interesting melodies that suggest Mott, The Band and John Cale on a modest scale. Matthew Fisher doesn’t have much of a voice, he’s not much of a lyricist either, and without the mythology of a Keith Moon or Steve Howe behind him it’s hard to see the small triumphs of Journey’s End as a journey that will lead someplace. He did release a few more albums, and if those have pictures of fetching women in field hockey uniforms I’ll probably be buying those too (damn you, Kenny Everett). Otherwise, probably not.
