T he first half of this 12-inch features “Umayeyo” in two mixes, neither one much different than the other. The rhythm uses a few pieces of world percussion in a funky groove with a slight metallic twang -- not bad if you want to sample something in the background, but far from memorable. “Yabu” (mixed by Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto) employs a melody and a more modern sound, so it’s scads better than the first side. This EP is probably geared more toward the sample market than home consumption, unless you like listening to club mixes (some folks do). Far from a multicultural experiment or percussive showcase, this EP is better described as electronic or ambient music that just happens to use percussion.
