AYA: My, a new concept album from Mike Keneally!?!?
RAHM (licking Maya’s lips just at the thought): Mmmm slurphh heeeeem.
The question on everyone’s mind is: What has Mike Keneally been up to lately? The answer is: He’s up to Act 1. Scambot 1 is a full-(mind)blown concept album about thought control, giant cats, people with bowling ball heads and a hero named Serial Consciousness Agent (Military Division): Bringer of Truth (a/k/a Scambot I have no idea where the D went although is anyone surprised that a Mike Keneally album is No D?). The concept, rendered in twenty and one half delicious squares on the liner notes, sixty-six minutes of music should you pull your head out of his notes long enough to notice, may be semi-autobiographical, probably stems from a festering disenchantment with the music industry and is almost certainly the product of a warped but cherishable genius. Not that any of Mike Keneally’s discs are something you just load into the CD tray and listen to in the background, but Scambot 1 is especially not such a something. It requires your attention, in part because (frankly) it stops demanding it somewhere around “Cat Bran Sammich Part One.” The waves of sour notiness, brain-pokingly smart at first, eventually dragged me into the undertow of apathy until the likeable “Cold Hands” and a powerful guitar solo on “We Are The Quiet Children” liberated me again. Most Mike Keneally discs are funnier and poppier than Scambot 1; most Frank Zappa discs are too for that matter. I guess I was expecting Joe’s Garage Act 4, and a few more “Hallmark” moments would have made me happier. As for whether Scambot 1 is an intimidating masterpiece or an outlandish hoax, omelette you decide.
