M OODYMYTH 7.0: SENSATION, EXPERIMENTATION, REPLICATION. The first time I heard this album (and this was the first Moodies album I ever heard), I thought it was all one great big yawn save for “The Story In Your Eyes.” With time, I learned to lump it in with Children and Balance as the soft middle of the Moodies. The band’s decision to continue alternating songs from every member, this despite the fact that Justin Hayward and John Lodge were clearly the better songwriters, resulted in a blanching of the original white knights as they become mere balladeers and psychedelic storytellers. And so EGBDF became just another in a series of cosmic continuum that shifted slowly from rock (“After You Came”) to grand psychedelic statement (“Procession”) to orchestral arrangement (“My Song”) to artful pop (“The Story In Your Eyes”) to children’s fantasy (“Nice To Be Here”) to lullaby (“Emily’s Song”). The Moodies’ seemingly ancient adherence to the album-oriented format didn’t hurt sales, but there were murmurs that the band might be trampled by the hordes of new rock barbarians who were storming the gates after The Beatles’ abdication/abnegation of studio pop sovereignty. Loyal blue tweenies continued to champion their antiquated quintet all the same, and in fairness EGBDF is still an interesting record (as evidenced by an MFSL remaster, an honor accorded few albums), but not the place to start lest the Moodies myth crumble in your hand without the foundational Days, Search and Dream to support it. I can personally vouch for the 1997 digital remaster, but I’m guessing the MFSL or super-high expanded versions are the way to travel.
