Morrissey
As the lead singer of The Smiths, Steven Morrissey had already achieved iconic stature when he released his first solo album, "Viva Hate." (The album titles were always in quotation marks, I don't know why.) Perhaps only Robert Smith of The Cure was more beloved by youth. Morrissey's career has continued in the same vein as The Smiths, minus Johnny Marr's galloping guitars but with the same supple, lyrical grace and indominable spirit of doomed love. Bona Drag (a compilation) and Vauxhall and I belong with the best of The Smiths; I know no higher praise.
