K ronomyth 7.0: IT’S A SMALL WORLD AFTER VAUXHALL. This is a compilation of miscellaneous A sides, backsides and tracks from his last few albums (not necessarily the better ones). Seems to me we’ve been bona dragged through this before, and World of Morrissey is an example of an enigmatic artist being a difficult one. In fact, the album’s raison d’etre (if in fact there is one) seems to center on building a release around the recent “Boxers” single, which also included “Have-a-Go Merchant” and “Whatever Happens, I Love You.” Album collectors will also get the excellent single from 1991, “My Love Life.” You should definitely hear that track; download it for a buck and save yourself a world of trouble. Otherwise, this is little more than a contract-fulfilling release assembled with little regard for its audience. The two tracks from Vauxhall And I are the two I was most likely to skip over in the first place, the live tracks from Beethoven Was Deaf are out of place here, and the extended version of “Moon River” is more painful than hearing David Bowie sing “God Only Knows” twice. EMI wisely chose not to reissue this album when they acquired Morrissey’s back catalog, and I agree. It serves no earthly purpose other than to drain away hard-earned cash. It’s not an awful record insofar as any album with 14 Morrissey songs is bound to have its momentary pleasures, but Morrissey fans themselves could pick a better 14 blindfolded for the same price.
