K ronomyth 4.0: ACES OF SPEED. Fast and Loud. They’re only words, like “punched in the stomach.” You have an image in your head, sure, but it’s not the same as actually being punched in the stomach. So imagine instead two fists, one with “fast” tattooed on it, the other with “loud.” Imagine them pummeling you while you stand there smiling. That’s the fast and loud we’re talking about. Two minutes into Ace of Spades, you’re either Motorhead’s biggest fan or their latest punching bag. THAT song, unquestionably the quintessential Motorhead moment, might be the quintessential metal moment. You couldn’t possibly go into a recording studio and make a heavy metal album without acknowledging that “Ace of Spades”--in its perfect embodiment of rock’s punk/outlaw ideal--changed everything. Of course, the two albums that led up to Ace of Spades weren’t slouches, but they didn’t contain “Ace of Spades,” “(We Are) The Road Crew,” “Jailbait” or “The Chase Is Better Than The Catch.” Those are some classic tracks that, today, form the foundation of the mythology around Motorhead. Amazingly, the intensity of Ace doesn’t let up until “The Hammer” falls. The whole thing plays out like a punk-metal album; suddenly it’s over, your head is ringing and you’re ready to run back into the fray for more. The 2001 reissue gives you more: the nonalbum B side “Dirty Love” and two tracks from the Motorhead/Girlschool novelty, St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. The 2005 double-disc reissue presents a disc’s worth of alternative takes and BBC broadcast versions. Any version of Ace is worth holding on to, especially when life deals you one of those nagging, gray days where a little Lemmy (that joker) can make all the difference.
