Pat Metheny and his Group were the most popular jazz fusion artists of the '80s, garnering no less than five Grammy awards during the decade. Metheny's solo career started out cold, literally, with albums recorded in Norway that had more than a little ice in their veins. His eponymous 1978 album introduced a climatic shift south, with warmer themes that suggest (to some) a South American influence. Being a jazz musician, he's also released some ornery albums with the likes or Ornette Coleman and Derek Bailey. Nascent Meth-heads may wish to make their bed at Offramp or the eponymous Pat Metheny Group.
