Paul McCartney
This wouldn't be much of a prog rock discussion without The Beatles, and not much of a Beatles discussion without Paul McCartney. (You see how this thing just sort of feeds on itself.) Paul has enjoyed the most successful solo career of all The Beatles. However, that band's mantle proved too heavy for Paul, who favored light compositions that brought his facility with melody to focus on matters of the heart mostly. Together with lovely wife Linda, Paul formed Wings in the early '70s. The band underwent a few lineup changes with guitarist Denny Laine (an early member of The Moody Blues) the only constant. This band released Band on the Run in 1973, viewed by many to be Paul's best post-Beatles album. By 1980, Paul McCartney was back to being a solo artist, reuniting with former Beatles producer George Martin for the critically acclaimed Tug of War. In the '90s, the songwriter released a pair of classical scores, perhaps looking to add substance to what many claimed was an insubstantial catalog. While I'd admit that Paul McCartney's solo output is no closer to the original magic than his bandmates', I'd hate to think of a world without songs like "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," "Band on the Run," "Coming Up," "Silly Love Songs" -- well, you get the point.
