D ifferent versions of the B side? Press on, you say... It turns out that lovely “Press” is just part of the story. Sure it’s a silly love song, but what’s wrong with that? In the US, “Press” was issued as a three-and-a-half minute video edit version. In the UK, they issued it in two versions: the video edit and 4:20 version. (The album version, for anyone keeping score at home, runs about 4:40.) And then there’s the dub mix of “Press” that appears on the 12-inch singles. All of which might be reckoned normal in a day in the life of a single. I naturally assumed that “It’s Not True” would be the same version that was added to the original CD release of Press To Play. But that’s not true. It’s a less mechanical mix, one minute shorter, that sounds markedly different from the CD version. (To its credit, it’s not credited as coming from “Press To Play.”) I’d still like a warmer version of “It’s Not True,” maybe even unplugged, but that two of them are swimming in the sea makes for a more interesting ocean.
