W aterfalls is one of McCartney’s least likely singles, a quiet song that’s barely fleshed out with buzzing synthesizers under a single melody line from the keyboard and, of course, McCartney’s voice. It’s a pleasant discovery on McCartney II, but I’m surprised this could stand the scrutiny of a single. The nonalbum flip side, Check My Machine, is a playful bit of fluff that could be considered a less-inspired cousin to “Bogey Music.” As with some of the other tracks on McCartney II, Oriental sounds appear in the background.
