Penguin Cafe Orchestra
I entered the music of Penguin Cafe Orchestra through the little door marked "Eno" and quickly fell in love with the band's second, eponymous album. Since I've only heard the first few records, my knowledge of the Penguins is necessarily limited. Led by Simon Jeffes, the orchestra included members whose names have floated in and out of avant garde discussions on EG Records and elsewhere: Gavyn Wright, Helen Liebmann, Steve Nye. Their music is difficult to describe; if you can imagine The Residents unplugged or African pop filtered through Western ears of childlike innocence, you'll at least have some idea of what to expect. Of all the EG artists in the '80s, Penguin Cafe was the least standoffish. The first album had its moments, but their second is pure delight from beginning to end and is the dish I'd recommend from this Cafe.
