Gabriel’s highest-charting single in the US, a feat aided in no small part by a groundbreaking video that garnered constant rotation on MTV (sadly, Americans watch tv more than they listen to the radio). Some sources refer to an extended version of the A side, others to an edited version; not that I doubt it, but I haven’t held them in my hand either. The flip side on the 7-inch single is a nonalbum track, “Don’t Break This Rhythm,” unique to the Sledgehammer singles. If the flip side sounded a little sketchy compared to the tracks on So, the melange of dry rhythms and muted melodies would have felt right at home on the subsequent Us. It’s a B side worth tracking down (and handily done). Picture sleeves for the 7-inch singles (as well as the German CD single) featured a sledgehammer in motion.
