S ome things just don’t translate well, like English lyrics sung with a heavy Italian accent or the live music of PFM on a piece of plastic. Cook comes to us from two different kitchens: NYC’s Central Park and Toronto University. Neither one screams out “high fidelity,” though there are passages of lucidity to be found on “Four Holes In The Ground” and “Alta Loma Nine Till Five” that give you some insight into what makes PFM so special. However, the real magic lies elsewhere, back in the studio. Bands like Yes, ELP and Gentle Giant released double and triple live albums because they understood the goal was satiety. In smaller doses, this stuff causes indigestion, which is what happens on Cook (and happened on ELP’s Live In Concert, Genesis Live, etc.). That I can’t name a single, single-album live recording that I really enjoy shows that it’s the medium and not the musicians to blame. Two elpees of “Alta Loma Nine Till Five” would have had me standing on my seat. But even one miscue can sink a six-track single elpee and Cook has two of them: “Dove....Quando....” and “Just Look Away.” The opening “Four Holes In The Ground” is just electric, but Cook nearly comes to a stop soon after. When “Celebration” tries to get things boiling again, I’m still in a slow simmer. Not that Cook could have been another Playing The Fool, but it might have been closer if Manticore had doubled the portions. Instead, listening to the inane “William Tell Overture” ending, I’m thinking it’s us who’ve been fooled. (We who’ve been fooled? Us who are being weaved fools? Apparently, that’s too much kvetching on Cook.)
