B uying used records means that I can invent histories for them. I like to imagine this particular single as the scarred veteran of a dusty jukebox buried in the corner of some dark, wooden drinking hole where people come to shout at the tv mounted behind the bar. There its black grooves would have served well the bruised souls of men and women half-drowned in drink. The flip side in this particular case is the inappropriately peppy “I Cannot Believe It’s True,” a sad song couched in a misplaced Motown arrangement. Maybe it fortified the resolve of more than a few bleary-eyed patrons, who’d made up their minds to get on with their lives. I usually prefer to pull out my heart with a corkscrew in private, but there have been weak shared moments when songs like “Against All Odds” have articulated in crowded rooms the words I dare not speak for fear of finishing some unholy incantation that might seal my celibacy. Er, yeah, anyway… the original B side was Larry Carlton’s “The Search” in the US and Mike Rutherford’s “Making A Big Mistake” in the UK.
