T he first time I heard this single, it seemed dark and powerful. As time went on, “In The Air Tonight” felt slicker, slightly more refined. Turned out I wasn’t imagining things; the original single is actually a different mix than the elpee version, more brooding and less tame than its later counterpart. The flip side didn’t change from single to elpee, though it combines to make a very dour one-two punch. As Face Value would prove, there was a much friendlier side to Phil after all.
