I always imagined that “Sussudio” was the sort of filler word you use when writing a song and expect to replace later. Wags like to point out that the song doesn’t make any sense, when in fact it does; it’s a love song about a girl named “Sussudio.” You can argue that “Sussudio” is a terrible name for a girl, but so was “Velouria,” and nobody picks on The Pixies. A 12-inch featured an extended version which is lame by comparison (you can pick on that song all you want). In the US, the flip side was the nonalbum track “I Like The Way.” Apparently, Sussudio had a twin sister, since the two sound a lot alike. File under Phitti Colliti. As usual, Songfacts sheds more light on the A side.
