Pixies
Ten years after Talking Heads exploded on the scene, Pixies exploded all over again. Along with bands like Camper Van Beethoven, Pixies were at the vanguard of a new alternative rock movement that promised to be smarter, funnier, cooler and stranger than the original late 70s scene (Pere Ubu notwithstanding). Early Pixies records were noisy, which led to them being mislabelled a punk band, but by Bossanova it was as much about the melodies as the mayhem. Amazingly, they only lasted for five years, but left a large and hairy footprint on the alternative rock scene that remains today. Black Francis continues to record as Frank Black and Kim Deal started The Breeders.
