Pretenders
Let’s face it, Leather Tuscadero wasn’t going to cut it. Chrissie Hynde, now there’s an object of desire. She grew up with all the right young punks, became a rock star anyway and (like all good punks) rejected it as so much fluff. In between the love/hate relationship, she and the Pretenders were the genuine article. They slowed down some as the decade 80 went, never toured much and confounded anyone who wished to subsist on a straight diet of their stuff. But they did release a half-dozen great songs, some quality albums and launched one of rock's most recognizable (if reluctant) female icons.
