T he remonstrance of communartists, cut from the bone of a decembrist moon and fed to the punchclock-cleaving faithless. I saw it hewing bone, made love to the shapes that slithered out of its shub-niggurath, pronounced it king and court jester, then drew lines to liberated freaks like Pere Ubu, Tom Verlaine, Butthole Surfers, Polyrock, Iggy Pop and created a new constellation from here24 unconnected stars of the underworld. Pere is the obvious sire of these things: mad ramblings and mechanistic clockwork cacophony, art/punk spelunkering in the subconscious of statecraft. Mayo is the mayor of Crayolaville, hunkered in punk’s bunker with a wired radio for a brain, tuned in and turned on and timed out. Ubu was ABnormal at best, but they read like calligraphy next to Crayola. Soldier-Talk is music for mad scientists, atonal abominations birthed in a fever, streaked with terrifying lucidity. “Soldier-Talk” and “Uh, Knowledge Dance” are these. Every song courts gibberish and genius, stormtroops to its own drummer, assaults the senses like tiny shards of glass ingested from the air and drawn deep into lacerated lungs. Most of you will find Mayo wound way too tight. I mean, the man makes David Thomas sound normal sometimes. But battle lines are drawn on this album, even as it blurs the line between noise and music, and to hear Soldier-Talk is to open a letter-bomb in the brain. Pere, Dada, we’re bastards all of us for dreaming of white picket fences even once. The revolution needs us, sings Soldier-Talk, to straighten it out, paying us straight from the lips of lost prophets.
