Y ou’re only going to get half a review out of me today, since my disc starts skipping like a drunk mayfly around “Strawberry Mind.” It’s been defective from day one, and I’m sure I could have returned it for a perfectly good copy, but there was always something strangely appropriate about this disc’s defection from the proper order of things. Sometimes, when the aliens turn their antennae just right, I’ve even been able to catch parts of “The Pit of Souls” and “Bells of Rhymney.” I know I should have fought harder to hear the rest of Fegmania!, taken the trouble to champion a track like “Heaven,” but I’m a simple soul at heart and was very happy with the songs that did play through: “Egyptian Cream,” “Another Bubble,” “My Wife & My Dead Wife.” Honestly, after listening to “My Wife & My Dead Wife” about a billion times, I was embarrassed to ask for more. England has, over the millenia, produced a long and illustrious line of eccentrics who see the flowers for the rain: Ray Davies, Syd Barrett, John Donne (in a pathetic attempt to cover by millenia-boasting meatcakes) and I’ll just et cetera those other 1,500 years in with a wink. There’s a loopy, left-of-center genius in their work that makes me deeply suspicious of a world that doesn’t see the flowers with them and subsequently buy them up in bunches. The fact that Julian Cope and XTC sell more records hardly explains how Hitchcock has managed to stay in the shadows. Through his strange grey lens, Robyn photographs the absurdity of marriage, the mother-son dynamic, puberty, and pastes them into a carnival of Freudian dream images. The mix of psychedelia and psychology is where the Dylan connection is strongest, but Hitchcock is more sweet and unstable, in the usual “aliens are watching us from the windows and can I carry your books home?” kind of way that the English alone have perfected.
