T here was Hitchcock’s besotted monsterpiece, Groovy Decay, moldering away with its prim twin, Groovy Decoy, in the rich soil of history. Ripe for the digging, figured Rhino, who sewed them together and put them on display as an archaeological freakshow. Hitchcock could pick his nose for ninety minutes and something tuneful would be bound to whistle out of one nostril, so I won’t tell you that the Decay/Decoy experiment is a complete loss. However, most Hitchcock albums can be counted on for a few strange beautiful songs that you’ll going humming down the dull eons, and Decay/Decoy doesn’t have them. It does contain “It Was The Night” (shades of “My Wife & My Dead Wife”) and “The Cars She Used To Drive,” both of which I like. However, you don’t really need to hear two versions of “Midnight Fish” and “Young People Scream” or even one version of “How Do You Work This Thing?” Decay producer Steve Hillage apparently confused Robyn Hitchcock with Richard Butler and turned the album into a noisy version of Bowie’s Low/Heroes complete with squawking saxophone. When Hitchcock re-released the sessions as Groovy Decoy some years later, he cleaned up the mix considerably, leaving only a handful of tracks like “America” and “Fifty Two Stations” untouched. Yet even the superior Decoy isn’t worth hunting. In a world with a wealth of Robyn Hitchcock albums, Groovy Decay, Groovy Decoy and Gravy Deco can all of them stay covered in the dust of history a little while longer while you discover his better works. You may not even make it this far. If you do, well, then groovy.
