P roduced by Paul Fox (XTC’s Oranges and Lemons), Perspex Island is Robyn Hitchcock run through the byrds & beatles pop-u-lizer: thumping bass, arpeggiated guitars drenched in chorus effects, melody and harmony and clever fadeouts for everyone. I would tell you that most of Hitchcock’s work is unduly difficult, then go running into its arms terrified of this candy-toting stranger. Is it a shameless bid for commercial acceptance? Ultra unbelievable as it may seem, yes. Oranges and Lemons was a spiky, difficult album much of the way because of Andy Partridge’s cranky resistance to conform. Robyn Hitchcock (like Colin Moulding) doesn’t put up much of a fight. Languid observations become arpeggiated monuments of pop, filler gets filigreed and all the strangeness gets steamrolled into cute quirkiness. However, a lot of this music is not accidentally lovely and charming. “So You Think You’re In Love” should have been a hit single, “She Doesn’t Exist” (Michael Stipe’s inane mumbling aside) is a beautiful bookend to “My Wife & My Dead Wife” and the opening “Oceanside” skips along chirpily enough. Toss in the lovely lyric sigh of “Ride” and the pretty “Birds In Perspex,” and Perspex Island is half worth having. But, oh, what you wouldn’t give for a wobbly, tiny Superman or a liberal squirt of Egyptian cream to shake everything to the left of normal. “Vegetation And Dimes” is the closest Hitchcock comes to his usual creepy (and deliciously inscrutable) confections. Perspex Island is a very pleasant record, but in the inverted world of Robyn Hitchcock that’s a disappointment, like spending a quiet evening with Syd Barret playing Scrabble.
