F eatures some of the worst whistling on record! (That’s the label I would have used on the front.) Seems to me the high road would have been not to release this at all, but I’m sure it was hard for the record companies to let go of Roxy Music. So this postmortem postcard was released and the real high road (Avalon) was washed from the collective memory for a moment. It always troubles me when record companies release “official” product like this, because then I feel compelled to own it, and the fact remains there is no compelling reason to own The High Road. Yes, the live version of “My Only Love” lingers lovingly, and I actually prefer this version of “Jealous Guy” to the original (the terrible whistling notwithstanding), but you’ll find all this (and less) on Heart Still Beating. (While the two document the same tour and the versions of the four songs shared in common sound identical, The High Road cites Scotland as the source, Heart cites France. I can’t tell you if they’re completely identical, but I can tell you that you don’t really need either of them.) Seen as an encore to the Roxy catalog, The High Road leans decidedly in the direction of Bryan Ferry, with two covers and a Ferry original from his Bride elpee, “Can’t Let Go.” Viva! Roxy remains the definitive live album for me, but if you’re really interested in The High Road Tour (and I couldn’t fault you for being nostalgic), pick up the full-length DVD of the concert instead.
