O ne of three must-have magical ingredients if you’re going to conjure the name of Santana, “Evil Ways” and “Oye Como Va” being the others. This single features just the black magic part, leaving the “Gypsy Queen” back in Abraxas. Great song, of course, but it befuddled me as a kid. (I used to think they were singing “I’ve got a flak in my jacoma.” Not that I have any idea what a jacoma is; credit my creativity to the song’s incantatory style.) The B side is Gregg Rolie’s “Hope You’re Feeling Better,” which also appears on Abraxas. And if you’re troubled by the scribbling on the single, don’t be. I say write your names on the songs you love and let them be your epitaph. But until then a long, happy life to you Karen David wherever you are.
