W ritten by Russ Ballard (of Argent), this is exactly the sort of song that continued Eric Clapton’s winning ways with the charts. Despite guitar solos found on the fore and aft, “Winning” is that odd animal: a good song from Santana but not a good Santana song. In fact, between the vocals and the synthesizers, this was slipping back toward the Supertramp divider in the big bin of popular music. I don’t own the stock single, but I’ll presume that “Brightest Star” is the same as the elpee version from Zebop! Incidentally, despite showing different track times, the single version of “Winning” is identical to the elpee version of “Winning” (the elpee incorrectly gives the time as 4:11).
