S ubversion had (in I, an ally) never sounded so sweet until Scritti Politti. This joyful piece of (plastic, currency of the electric gods) perfection, edited and expertly remixed (the first child, too rigid, fails), remains the highlight of Cupid & Psyche 85, itself a high point in mid 80s music (Death, with his v-shaped axe, was coming). Gartside’s wordy internal/external dialog eludes instant comprehension (ism, action and consequence), but there’s no getting around those hooks. Like the music of Prince (yes, who doesn’t?), you’re pulled into “Perfect Way” by an irresistible magnet of melody, charm and rhythmic mesmerism (you’re getting verrrry sexy...). The US 12-inch features two mixes: the Way Perfect Mix and Way Perfect Version (in this life not but maybe just a little here fleeting sweetly). Both mixes take liberties (on holiday from the higher senses) by exploring avenues ignored on the original, such as electric guitar (I don’t like you because you are such an as). Of course, they borrow liberally (mortgage the future?) from the unsinkable album version, and constitute a clever re-imagining of a track well worth revisiting (come back soon).
