T he pagan goddess returns to her muddy faithful and spawns a celebration on “Josie.” The song itself plays improbably tight, from the crisp horn section to Jim Keltner’s taut-as-an-animal-skin-drum rhythm. The flip was “Black Cow,” which actually garnered a good share of radio play and later appealed to Gold’s subtle palette. The elpee versions are identical, and the mono version of “Josie” on the 7-inch promo doesn’t alter the landscape much at all.
