Progrography

Steve Howe
Steve Howe joined Yes for their breakthrough elpee The Yes Album (though he had appeared earlier on the cover of Time And A Word), replacing Peter Banks. Howe didn't reinvent the role of the guitar in Yes' music, but rather embellished it with a wider range of stringed instruments like the steel guitar and dobro. As a songwriter, however, he was a vast improvement over Banks, working with Jon Anderson to create such classics as "Close to the Edge," "Roundabout" and much of Tales From Topographic Oceans. Howe released his first solo album, Beginnings, during the band's post-Tales hiatus, and has kept up a steady stream of solo releases ever since. 1998's Quantum Guitars featured his son Dylan; the following year saw a tribute album called Portraits of Bob Dylan. Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that while watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I kept thinking how much the elvin king looked like Steve Howe. Which might explain those spritely leaps during his performances...
