T his soulful follow-up to the much-anticipated High Life topped the US charts and spawned a sultry, sepia-toned music video that featured someone’s sweaty vision of dirty dancing circa a 1950 that never happened. (It’s here. Hopefully, you have something better to do with your time.) That’s always been the trouble with soul: it’s gospel gone wild. Winwood would seem an unlikely standard-bearer of soul on the surface, but he’s carried it as well as Clapton has the blues over the years. The flip side is the kind of warm, synthetic pop music that Phil Collins was making in buckets. Roll With It, Groovy Kind of Love, freemasons run the world.
