T hat noble laureate of post-production, Tom Lord-Alge, remixed “Valerie” for the career compilation Chronicles, adding some big drums in a few notable spots. Since the remix phenomenon was still in its relative infancy, it’s not the heavy handed treatment that you might expect from a remix. (In fact, the single doesn’t even refer to the track as a remix.) So, no major tampering from this cool pop breeze from the land of wind and wood. The B side is a nonalbum instrumental version of “Talking Back To The Night” that now features the saxophone (which seems fitting, since the original lyric invoked the image of a saxophone player on a street). In the interest of keeping things brisk, the instrumental seems to edit out the chorus section. Not muzak exactly, but not far removed from the frothy stuff that bubbles behind late-night talk show promos. Incidentally, I don’t know who the saxophone player is -- that’s one for the rainy day research department.
