Styx
A sour wince at the mention of "american prog" evinces my distaste for it. In its classic incarnation, Kansas and Styx are the undisputed masters, and even they were guilty of grand larceny in the beginning. Both bands eventually came into their own, however; in Styx' case on albums like The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight. And yet, Styx (like Kansas) never abandoned the hard rock format. Instead, guitarist James Young and keyboardist Dennis DeYoung (like Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren) wrote songs that rocked and progged, respectively. John Curulewski and, later, Tommy Shaw provided the band with a third songwriter. In fact, it was Shaw's departure for a solo career that slowed (but never stopped) the Stygian flow. They released an album of cover tunes, Big Bang Theory, in 2005.
