I ’ve taken to strolling through the auto graveyard lately, admiring the stylish fin de siecle angst sticking out of the crunching metal scrapyard. Galactic Cowboys, Fudge Tunnel, Tad. Once forgotten, now remembered... I slip Inhaler in the audiocassette tray, and Tad breathes again. You can see their breath in the chill air as they storm through eleven cuts like hellhounds protecting their charred and scarred charge. Why some lads of the left lane never got that major-label turbo boost (Galactic Cowboys, Mudhoney, Tad) while others did (Pantera, Primus, White Zombie, maybe kinda sorta Meat Puppets) lies beyond these lands. Maybe it’s fate, bad karma, not enough commercial appeal. Whatever the reason, when the dust settles you’ll still find Inhaler standing. It’s a great, giant slab of immovable energy, as razor-sharp as anything to come from the great metal forest of the ‘90s. They had the attitude of punks, the chops of speed metal freaks, the sonic presence of chemical experimentalists. Listen to tracks like “Pansy,” “Throat Locust,” “Lycanthrope,” “Luminol” and you’re in the belly of the beautiful beast, swallowed and covered in something acrid and sticky and warm. They’re the offspring of Sabbath and the original metal crusaders, all doom and gloom but too high too die. Yet Tad had a softer side, musical like Meat Puppets on cuts like “Gouge” and “Leafy Incline.” Maybe this is what Giant hoped to peddle, but they piddled the bundle after a smidgen of trouble. (I guess nobody told them Tad were giant killers.) If you’re going through the metal boneyard looking for something to salvage, get Inhaler. It’ll impale ya.
